Purple Room Productions Present Absent Friends | A Comedy by Alan Ayckbourn
A group meet to give comfort to a bereaved friend, Colin. However, his acceptance of the situation and memories of the fulfilling time spent with his fiancée serve only to highlight and widen the rifts in the other relationships. Colin’s well-meaning, unremitting attempts to rake over everyone’s past are born out of kindness but the effects are calamitous!
Absent Friends deals, comically but sensitively, with the tongue-tied, embarrassed modern response to death, uncomprehending husbands and neglected wives, rotting marriages and adulterous sex.
‘… Simple in form, it is powerful in effect. Through nervous edgy laughter, it shows Ayckbourn suggesting that the best friends are indeed those who are usually absent.’ Michael Billington
